Again, I changed my idea because I found a game that better suits the idea and tone of being a bit of a dick while playing a game.
The prisoner’s dilemma is a canonical example of a game analyzed in game theory that shows why two purely “rational” individuals might not cooperate, even if it appears that it is in their best interests to do so.
With this idea in my head, I set forth and made a simple game in which it would be in peoples best interest to work together to reach 5 points and win. Simple enough really.
With that said, I built a system where each player puts 1 of the 2 cards in their hand into the center face down. The player can chose X or Y to place. When everyone has placed, cards are revealed.
Points are allocated as such:
- 4 xs’ = +1 for x, 0 for y
- 3 xs’, 1 y = -1 for x, +3 for y
- 2 xs’, 2 ys’ = +1 for x, -1 for y
- 1 x, 3 ys’ = +1 for x, -1 for y
- 4 ys’ = 0 for x, -3 for y
This will go on until someone reaches 5, 10 or a set amount of points. There is a lot of chances for undercutting and being shit to each other by trying to be selfish and trying to take all the points for themselves, but if too many do it, then it will play badly for all.
This system may be tweaked based on what works through play testing, but hopefully will be able to refine a system that gives a better point distribution to better fit the game. I will change X and Y to represent something, but that is all aesthetics and not worth fiddling with at the moment.
