FLIP SIDE – Play Testing – Blog 3

Beginning to progress with my game I have now got a prototype and a name… Flip Side. The prototype consists of a cardboard cut-out of a world map, moving pieces (which are international coins) and then there are many supplementary pieces involved used to complete challenges such as dice and play dough.

Throughout game play testing there were many aspects I found needed adjusting, removing or needed extra elements added. The first was challenge cards, I first play tested with 3 cards on each continent, due to this players weren’t able to keep the cards they had completed to keep track of their score, this is because the cards had to be reused. Reusing cards made the game predictable and less exciting so more cards need to be made to make the game more effective. However, other than just adding cards I also discovered that creating a scoreboard will make the game flow better.

I found this useful as no one kept track of their own score and had no idea when they were able to proceed to the next continent or not. Challenge cards were majorly altered, either in time restriction or difficulty, these were tested multiple times until they were adjusted appropriately. Moving pieces were changed as a recommendation by a player who play tested, from the original idea of coloured planes to different currency coins from around the world adding uniqueness and sticking to the theme.

And finally, due to different challenges requiring different time limits, a physical sand timer will not be included. Instead; to add a digital element, any player in the game needs to supply a mobile which can be adjusted to time each challenge as requested. This can also be beneficial as Boer, C and Lamers, M (2004) discover in their research in ‘Electronic Augmentation of Traditional Board Games’ that as long as technology is non-obtrusive then the player has clear benefits such as customization, ease of use and a higher level of excitement.
