BCM215: Critical self-reflection

Throughout studying BCM215 (Game Media), I always confuse the purpose of my roles in my comment of my colleagues’ post. I used to think that the feedback process won’t give a result if people don’t need to reply to my feedback, or they don’t take it seriously. Therefore, I believed that spending a lot of time to comment is unnecessary.

However, when I read my classmate’s feedback for my pitch, I am happy. They contributed many good ideas to improve my digital artifact. In my task, which comments on other students’ posts, I took it seriously. My comments are based on the criteria: accurate evaluation and contribution. In my comments, I could suggest further directions, enrich my colleagues’ evidence for method and concept development, and improve the utility for users in the next turn. I also recommend some sources to comfort their theme, especially I usually two sources in each topic: an academic reference and a popular source. To gain experience from previous comments of BCM114, I haven’t commented too much to avoid similar other comments in the blog.

I started to my pitch’s feedback with Shuning’s Li pitch. The aim of her DA focus on “the development of Chinese Mobile Games from the perspective of players.”. While Shunning indicated strengths in choosing the good topic and platform to present her DA. However, she hasn’t understood methods to create a pitch because her pitch lacks a lot of content (the utility of DA or resource). For this reason, I suggested that she need to add missing content and adjust her topic in the next beta.
Moreover, I have been convinced her DA because Shunning’s method was not precise. She just focused on the analysis of two mobile games: PUGB, and Honor of Kings. Finally, her pitch didn’t have sources to support the DA, so I found two useful sources which related her topic. The first source is news and published in 2017, so I think that information of this source can accurate, and support why Honor of Kings is popular in China. I also found an academic source to improve the reasoning in her DA because the article focuses on the attraction of mobile games in China.

2. Anthea Tomaras’s Game in Education:

When I engaged in the feedback process, I believe that the process is important to improve the Digital Artifact. As a result, in the comment for Anthea, I pay attention to observe more aspects in her pitch (like the concept, method, or utility). In her blog post, she focused on presenting games in education, and the scope of her DA is “How computer games are used as learning accessory in education.”. Anthea’s strength in her pitch is a good idea and presentation about her specific plan. In addition, I give a compliment for her because she can find a lot of academic sources to support her DA. However, the utility of her DA is unclear. For this reason, I suggested to her to adjust the topic and promote her platform on Twitter. To enrich the contents on this topic, I searched for two sources from the website to use her example in the next blog posts.

3.  Qinrui Li’s Food in Game.

I am interested in “food in games,” so I have watched her blog many times to give useful suggestions on her DA. The purpose of her DA is that features food games from past to now and how the food helps player attract in games. In her pitch, she presented her plan clearly about methodology and concept development. Furthermore, she started well when she found a lot of sources with many different types. However, her weakness is the way to arrange for the ‘blog’s content is not detailed. Her DA’s utility is still meager and needs to add and explain to the audience. She already had many useful sources, but almost them is popular sources (like news, blog post, …). For this reason, I searched for some academic sources and annotated their usage for her in the comment.

Overall, I have critically engaged in my colleagues’ DA concept. I am quite happy with my comments, but I need to improve my writing skill and focus on specific content. I also spent a lot of time to search for sources on their topics because I expect that my references will be useful to support them in the next steps. I hope that my comments will help them improve DA.
