Nostalgia

The number of people who know who Mario would be a very large number. Mario has been around for 36 years and I don’t think there will be a time when this character ‘dies’.

For most people Mario was a part of their childhood. Now days more and more kids have access to games

Modality

This game is a PVP and PVE. You can vs your friends which make the experience more of a social one. I can remember my father having a games night for Mario kart. Everyone would bring their remote and they would battle it out to see who the Mario kart king was.

Game Archaeology.

The game series Mario kart has been around for 27 years and it hasn’t changed too much over time. The main concept has stayed the same. Finish in first place.

The evolution:

Mario kart was first developed in 1992. Mario Kart is a go kart style racing game. It originated on the Super Nintendo Entertainment system and is now available on iPhone.

Let’s take it back a step. Who is Mario?

Mario is a fictional Nintendo character acting as Nintendo’s mascot. Mario has featured in 200 video games such as super smash bros, super Mario 3d world and super Mario galaxy. Mario like many other Nintendo characters has the ability to power up. Mario’s power -ups include Super Mushroom, which causes Mario to grow larger. The Fire/ice Flower, which allows Mario to throw fire and burn enemy’s or throw ice and freeze them.

So now that you know who Mario is we can dive deeper into Mario Kart.

Super Mario Kart

So Mario Kart originated on the console called the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The first game was called Super Mario Kart. This game was the first to implement combat elements within racing.

Mario Kart 64

The next version was released (1996). This was for the Nintendo 64. The improvements from the last version include being able to multi play with up to 4 players. It was also the first game in this series to implement 3d graphics.

Mario Kart Super Circuit

The first hand held version of Mario Kart  for the Game Boy Advanced. This version also allows up to four players with use of the game link cable. There was a multiplayer mode where only one player had to have the game cartridge. This meant you could vs your friends even if they didn’t have the game, but you did. This version has the all new Lightning Cup.

Mario Kart Double Dash

Is for the Game Cube. The main addition in this version is that you can now play with two characters in the one kart. This means two players can play cooperatively one being the driver and one being the character on the back. There are also special items specific to different pairs of characters. Such as: IMAGE.

There are also a lot of new karts to select from depending on the combination of characters.

Mario Kart DS

Some of the new features in this version include Bullet Bill power up, this item generally goes to players coming last or are close to losing. This item automatically drives and takes you up 7 places smashing karts that are in the way. The Rocket start was also new in this version of the game. The rocket start enables players to start accelerating early to get a power boost at the start of the race. This version also introduced Missions. Beating the mission would enable the player to create custom emblems for their karts. Some of the missions included picking up coins on racetracks, destroying item boxes, using stars / bombs /shells to destroy enemy’s and driving backwards.

Mario Kart Wii.

According to The Top tens website this is the best version of Mario Kart (https://www.thetoptens.com/best-mario-kart-games/)

With over 36 million copies of the game sold, Mario Kart Wii is the second best-selling Wii game (after Wii Sports) and the best-selling Mario game for the Wii console. Some of the new features in this version are Increasing the number of racers from 8 to 12. This is most likely because there is the option to have 4 way multiplayer races. The new item called the Mega Mushroom has been introduced in this version. This item enables the player to grow bigger and squash other races by running over them. This effect lasts for 7.5 seconds. The item called thunder cloud is also new in this version. The thunder cloud hovers over the players and trikes them with lighting. They then shrink to a very small size for 10 seconds driving more slowly. There are now bikes in the race. This gives the players more options of vehicles to choose from. You can now do wheelies which give the player a mini boost in speed.

Mario Kart 7

this is the third instalment of the hand held version of the game. The main new feature is hang gliding through air sections of new and old tracks and using propellers for underwater driving. Players are also available to customise their karts. They can choose their karts body, wheels and glider. There are also 6 unlock able drivers.

Mario kart 8 Wii U: 2014

This version of the game is the first that can be purchased through the Nintendo E-shop. One of the main new features is anti-gravity. This meaning drivers can drive on almost any surface on the track. There is also now the option to race in an ATV. In this version there are 1-12 players All new 200cc class.

Mario Kart Tour for iPhone/Android.

This is the first instalment of the series that is free to download and play. the game features Tour Challenges and Gold Challenges, which reward Grand Stars, and Standard Challenges, which reward rubies, the main currency of the game. This can buy new characters and buy upgrades to the karts. Each driver, kart and glider have favoured courses, on which they offer advantages if they are used. This could be Toad racing on Toad circuit.

There are variations to the tracks. There are R tracks which stand for reverse tracks. There are also T tracks which are trick tracks. The T tracks feature more jumps and ramps for players to perform tricks on.
